Dear Daughter:
As we drove off from Columbia, I wanted to write a letter to you to tell you all that is on my mind.
First, I want to tell you how proud we are. Getting into Columbia is a real testament of what a great well-rounded student you are. Your academic, artistic, and social skills have truly blossomed in the last few years. Whether it is getting the highest grade in Calculus, completing your elegant fashion design, successfully selling your painted running shoes, or becoming one of the top orators in Model United Nations, you have become a talented and accomplished young woman. You should be as proud of yourself as we are.
I will always remember the first moment I held you in my arms. I felt a tingling sensation that directly touched my heart. It was an intoxicating feeling I will always have. It must be that “father-daughter connection” which will bind us for life. I will always remember singing you lullaby while I rocked you to sleep. When I put you down, it was always with both relief (she finally fell asleep!) and regret (wishing I could hold you longer). And I will always remember taking you to the playground, and watching you having so much fun. You were so cute and adorable, and that is why everybody loved you so.
You have been a great kid ever since you were born, always quiet, empathetic, attentive, and well-mannered. You were three when we built our house. I remember you quietly followed us every weekend for more than ten hours a day to get building supplies. You put up with that boring period without a fuss, happily ate hamburgers every meal in the car, sang with Barney until you fell asleep. When you went to Sunday Chinese school, you studied hard even though it was no fun for you. I cannot believe how lucky we are as parents to have a daughter like you.
You have been an excellent elder sister. Even though you two had your share of fights, the last few years you have become best friends. Your sister loves you so much, and she loves to make you laugh. She looks up to you, and sees you as her role model. As you saw when we departed, she misses you so much. And I know that you miss her just as much. There is nothing like family, and other than your parents, your sister is the one person who you can trust and confide in. She will be the one to take care of you, and the one you must take care of. There is nothing we wish more than that your sisterhood will continue to bond as you grow older, and that you will take care of each other throughout your lives. For the next four years, do have a short video chat with her every few days, and do email her when you have a chance.
College will be the most important years in your life. It is in college that you will truly discover what learning is about. You often question “what good is this course”. I encourage you to be inquisitive, but I also want to tell you : “education is what you have left after all that is taught is forgotten”. What I mean by that is the materials taught isn’t as important as you gaining the ability to learn a new subject, and the ability to analyze a new problem. That is really what learning in college is about – this will be the period where you go from teacher-taught to master-inspired, after which you must become self-learner. So do take each subject seriously, and even if what you learn isn’t critical for your life, the skills of learning will be something you cherish forever.
Do not fall into the trap of dogma. There is no single simple answer to any question. Remember during your high school debate class, I always asked you to take on the side that you don’t believe in? I did that for a reason -- things rarely “black and white”, and there are always many ways to look at a problem. You will become a better problem solver if you recognized that. This is called “critical thinking”, and it is the most important thinking skill you need for your life. This also means you need to become tolerant and supportive of others. I will always remember when I went to my Ph.D. advisor and proposed a new thesis topic. He said “I don’t agree with you, but I’ll support you.” After the years, I have learned this isn’t just flexibility, it is encouragement of critical thinking, and an empowering style of leadership, and it has become a part of me. I hope it will become a part of you too.
Follow your passion in college. Take courses you think you will enjoy. Don’t be trapped in what others think or say. Steve Jobs says when you are in college, your passion will create many dots, and later in your life you will connect them. In his great speech given at Stanford commencement , he gave the great example where he took calligraphy, and a decade later, it became the basis of the beautiful Macintosh fonts, which later ignited desktop publishing, and brought wonderful tools like Microsoft Word to our lives. His expedition into calligraphy was a dot, and the Macintosh became the connecting line. So don’t worry too much about what job you will have, and don’t be too utilitarian, and if you like Japanese or Korean, go for it, even if your dad thinks “it’s not useful.” :) Enjoy picking your dots, and be assured one day you will find your calling, and connect a beautiful curve through the dots.
Do your best in classes, but don’t let pressure get to you. Your mother and I have no expectations for your grades. If you graduate and learn something in your four years, we would feel happy. Your Columbia degree will take you far, even if you don’t graduate with honors. So please don’t give yourself pressure。During your last few months in high school, you were so happy because there was little pressure and college applications are finished. But in the past few weeks, we saw you are beginning to worry (did you know you bite your nails when you are nervous?). Please don’t be worried. The only thing that matters is that you learned. The only metric you should use is that you tried. Grades are just silly letters that give the vain people something to brag, and the lazy people something to fear. You are too good to be either.
Most importantly, make friends and be happy. College friends are often the best in life, because during college you are closer to them physically than to your family. Also, going through independence and adulthood is a natural bonding experience. Pick a few friends and become really close to them – pick the ones who are genuine and sincere to you. Don’t worry about their hobbies, grades, looks, or even personalities. You have developed some real friendships in high school in your last two years, so trust your instinct, and make new friends. You are a genuine and sincere person – anyone would enjoy being your friend, so be confident, outgoing, and pro-active. If you think you like someone, tell her. You have very little to lose. Give people the benefit of the doubt; don’t stereotype and be forgiving. People are not perfect, so as long as they are genuine and sincere, trust them and be good to them. They will give back. This is my secret of success – that I am genuine with people and trust them (unless they do something to lose my trust). Some people tell me that occasionally I would be taken advantage of. They are right, but I can tell you that that loss is nothing compared to what I gained. In my last 18 years leading people, I have realized that only one thing matters – to gain the trust and respect of others, and to do so, you need to trust and respect others first. Whether it is for management, work, or friendship, this is something you should ponder.
Do keep your high school friends, and stay connected to them, but do not use them as substitutes for college friendship, and do not spend too much time with them, because that would eat into your time to make new friends.
Start planning for your summers early – what would you like to do? Where would you like to live? What would you like to learn? What have you learned in college that might change your mind? I think your plan of studying fashion is good, and you should decide where you want to be, and get into the right courses. We of course hope you come back to Beijing, but you should go where you think is best for you.
Whether it is summer-planning, or coursework planning, or picking a major, or managing your time, you should take control of your life. In the past, I have helped you quite a bit, whether it is in college application, designing your extracurricular activities, or picking the initial coursework. I will always be there for you, but the time has come for you to be in the driver’s seat – this is your life, and you need to be in control. I will always remember the exhilarating feeling in my life – that I got to decide to skip kindergarten, that I got to decide to change to computer science major, that I got to decide to leave academia for Apple, that I got to decide to go to China, that I got to decide to go to Google, and most recently, that I got to decide to start my own business. Being able to decide means you get to live the life that you want to. Life is too short to live the life others do or others want you. Being in control feels great. Try it, and you’ll love it!
I told your mom I’m writing this letter, and asked what she wanted me to say. She thought and said: “just ask her to take care of herself.” Simple but deeply caring – that is how your mother is, and that is why you love her so much. In this simple sentence is her hope that you will become independent in the way you take care of yourself – that you will remember to take your medicine, that you will get enough sleep, that you will have a balanced diet, that you will get some exercise, and that you will go see a doctor whenever you don’t feel good. An ancient Chinese proverb says that the most important thing to be nice to your parents is to take care of yourself. This is because your parents love you so much, and that if you are well, they will have comfort. You will understand this one day when you become a mother. But in the meantime, please listen to your mother and take care of yourself.
College is the four years where you have:
• the greatest amount of free time
• the first chance to be independent
• the most flexibility to change
• the lowest risk for making mistakes
So please treasure your college years – make the best of your free time, become an independent thinker in control of your destiny, evolve yourself into a bi-cultural talent, be bold to experiment, learn and grow through your successes and challenges.
When I faced the greatest challenge and opportunity in my life in 2005, you gave me a big hug and said “bonne chance”, which means “good luck” and “good courage”. Now I do the same for you. Bonne chance, my angel and princess. May Columbia become the happiest four years in your life, and may you blossom into just what you dream to be.
Love,
Dad (& Mom)

Innovation Column: "Google Wave" of the psychological effects of
Over the past week,GoogleIssued the first batch of beta invitations, invite users to experience the latest "real-time communication collaboration" products-Google Wave (Google waves).
Users no longer have to frequently switch the window to send the message, and now they can create waves of looks like a web-based document, other users can modify or add an immediate comment, it seems that e-mail, Wikipedia, instant messaging and social networking the various functions wereWaveCombines one of the.
The previous feedback is positive, the user of the beta invitations are in high demand. The question now is more concentrated with the technical aspects of the discussion above, rather than its users.

The library never closed——by Google
"Electric cars do not deserve the popularity of the fundamental reason is that: (1) manufacturers do not allow the public to correctly understand the extraordinary effectiveness of electric vehicles; (2) [power company] did not provide a sufficient number of charging stations to let possession and use of electric vehicles becomes easy. between early speed, mileage and features are very limited electric vehicles to the public since the negative impression of surviving. "
Quotation in understanding electric cars for people who may be hardly anything. However, if it says that more than one hundred years ago, the annual production of electric vehicles only a few thousand sets of the era, perhaps somewhat different. This article appeared in a 1916 "Electric World" (Electrical World), is in my Google Books - up to a million book online library - where to find. In the more than 100 years ago, book, read something so modern is very strange really, but I can often be obtained from history, inspiration for the future. In this matter, I was lucky - the early twentieth century, extensive research on electric vehicles, leaving a number of books available I choose. As the books published before 1923 are not copyright protection, I can easily access them.
Predecessors left a broad array of books, and now they all stay in top university libraries, only those stubborn scholars a chance to see. Written after 1923, the book quickly disappeared in the text of the black hole. These books can only be submitted for publication in print only buy a limited few years, with few exceptions. A few years later, these books were moved to the sharp reduction in the number of libraries and books stores. As time goes by, the contract has been gradually forgotten by people, authors and publishers from the vanished, copyright owners are nowhere to be found.
Unique Copy of the last remaining few will inevitably slow decay, or face fires, floods, disasters and so on. When I go to school at Stanford in 1998 also, when soaked in the floods destroyed tens of thousands of books. Unfortunately, this became a common occurrence - Stanford during the flood 20 years ago, suffered a similar ordeal. You can, "Stanford - Lockheed Meyer Library Flood Report" (The Stanford-Lockheed Meyer Library Flood Report) found in this book describes the floods may be published in 1980, this book is now looking for is not up.
Books in the collective knowledge (collective knowledge) and cultural heritage has a pivotal position, Google co-founder Larry Page (Larry Page) a decade ago all the books intended to digital. At that time Google was a fledgling start-up companies, we do not have the ability to attract others to participate in this ambitious plan is full of challenges. But five years later in 2004, Google Books (then known as Google Print) was born, the user can read through the network to hundreds of thousands of books. Now that number exceeds 10 million, and growing.
This year our program has been publisher of the Writers Union and the United States to prosecute. Although the parties have different views, but we have a common goal - so deeply embedded in countless out of print book of human wisdom see the light again while giving the copyright owner a reasonable compensation. In the end, we have developed a solution to achieve a common vision of all parties. Authors, publishers, and Google are benefiting, but the real winner is to obtain permission to readers around the world who read the book.
This agreement has been well received by controversy, all aspects of the groups have expressed their opinions, mixed. I am very pleased to take this opportunity to clarify some of the facts relating to this agreement and to share with you this cause I am very proud of reasons. The agreement aims to enable hundreds of millions of out of print (and copyrighted) books through paid or free of charge (funded by advertising) way for readers to use. Most of the income will belong to copyright owners, namely, books, the author or publisher.
It is claimed that this agreement is a compulsory license on the grounds that in most collective agreements, all members of the collective before the arrival of a particular date no right to opt out. The fact is that copyright owners may at any time for their works to set prices and access to, or exit from the Google Books. For those copyright owners of books yet to emerge, we will formulate a reasonable price and access to the default provisions. This will give readers a chance to read a number of unclaimed copyrighted works. We earn revenue from copyright owner will be their motivation appears.
Others on this agreement in the impact of competition, questioned, or assert that it will limit consumer choice out of print books. In fact, this agreement is not binding on any other company or organization efforts in similar areas. Now, if you want to read a representative out of print books, your only choice is - fly to the United States a small number of several first-class library, quietly hope that it will be you in the upper shelves.
Hopefully there are 100 kinds of services will allow me to easily read such a book; it would save me a lot of time, Google will make a big effort to spend less. Despite the need for a number of important efforts to set up a digital calendar (Google book project for a number of similar funds, including the Library of Congress several subsidiary bodies), but not a large-scale, simply because no one else is willing to carry out the necessary resources to investment. If you have not one hundred such services, that at least one to stay.
Google Books, if successful, others will follow. They will have have a more convenient way: This agreement has created a book copyright registration (book rights registry) sections, to encourage copyright holders to cooperate with us and for other projects to obtain permission to provide fast access. While the new projects will not immediately right unclaimed copyright books have the same rights, this agreement will become a beacon of compromise (a beacon of compromise), in order to avoid similar legal proceedings. The same time, the unique nature of the agreement for these books as a pioneer in the legislation, as Google has insisted on it, and will always stick to it.
Finally, there are products on the Google Books and agreements, some specific aspects of dissatisfaction with the planned future services, including bibliographic information of the quality of the classification system of choice and privacy provisions of the details. These are legitimate questions and the pursuit of product quality as a company, we have worked very hard to find solutions to these problems the program - complete bibliographic information and classification, and further complement Privacy Policy. If we can not provide the right product, people will pre-empt us one step. But what seems clear is that no matter which one interrupts the process would be contrary to the spirit of the agreement.
Google Books, I found another book, "Insurance Year 1880-1881 Yearbook" (the Insurance Year Book 1880-1881), by Cornelius E Siwo Herford (Cornelius Walford) in accordance with dozens of records in chronological order libraries and the destruction of several one million books, he hoped that such a record make people aware of the need to act and to protect them are no longer damaged. Library of Alexandria, Egypt, the famous fire occurred three times, respectively in 48 BC, AD 273 and AD 640. The Library of Congress in 1851, two thirds of the books in a fire in the ashes.
I hope that no more incidents of similar destructive, but history will not agree with my thoughts. More importantly, even if our cultural heritage is intact collections in the world's most solid library, if no one can read it then what use does it. Many companies, libraries, and organizations will be in the protection and use of literature in the twentieth century to play their own role. Authors, publishers, and Google will jointly take a step towards this goal, but it is an important step. Let us seize this opportunity.

Chinese scientists to build "artificial black hole" use of solar energy absorbed
According to the British "New Scientist" reported that, at present, scientists have constructed the first time, can absorb light around the artificial magnetic "black hole." The device can absorb solar energy, can be transformed into the use of heat or electricity.
This man-made black hole in the microwave frequencies, the near future will be able to absorb visible light, is harvesting solar energy generated electricity as a new way. Earlier this year, India's Urdu University, Ivica root - Narayan Manuo Wei (Evgenii Narimanov) and Alexander - Kilday Xie (Alexander Kildishev) in the media magazine published a study on how the construction can absorb light desktop black hole theory. Universe, black holes can simulate the artificial black hole, its strong gravity can bend space-time around, resulting in any material or radiation followed around the twisted space-time, and spiral inward and be absorbed.
Narayan Ma Nuowei and Kilday Xie believes that this man-made black hole can bend light absorption to the Device Center. They have designed artificial black hole is a coaxial ring contains the center of the shell cylindrical structure composed of columns. Make a key factor in inward bending of light is the dielectric constant of the coaxial ring shells, which can affect the electrical component of electromagnetic waves, increasing from the outside to the inside surface smoothness, which is similar to near the black hole space-time curvature. When the coaxial ring shells in contact with the center column, coaxial dielectric ring must match the center column, so the light can be absorbed, rather than being reflected.
Currently, China's Southeast University, Nanjing, scientists will Narayan Manuo Wei Tiejun Cui and Qiang Xie, and Kilday the theory applied for the practice, the construction of a microwave frequency of the "artificial black hole." The device uses a "super material" structure into a 60 coaxial rings, it is learned, super-material was used to make invisible cloak.
Each coaxial ring structure of circuit board in a different form of the formation of coaxial rings connected to each other, so the dielectric constant is very smooth. The external shell 40 coaxial rings, the internal 20 coaxial rings absorber. Tie-Jun Cui said: "When the incident electromagnetic wave hits the device, the electromagnetic waves will be induced into the coax inside the ring, and then be absorbed. In the coaxial ring will absorb the light into heat."
Narayan great praise China Ma Nuowei two scientists constructed an artificial black hole, he said: "I am very surprised that they can escape so quickly to complete the construction of artificial black hole!"
This man-made black hole in the same way is not easy to catch waves, visible light wavelengths than the microwave radiation, many orders of magnitude smaller. This requires a corresponding need for the construction of coaxial ring more smaller. Tie-Jun Cui for their construction of artificial black hole full of confidence, he said: "I hope that this optical black hole can be widely used at the end of 2009."
Like this man-made black hole can be used to collect solar energy, especially for solar reflectors are too diffuse, difficult to gather the sun on the solar cell light. Optical Artificial black holes are able to completely absorb the light and absorbed directly into the coaxial ring of the solar cells. Narayan Manuo Wei said: "If this device can work effectively, then the future will no longer need to adopt the parabolic mirror to collect the sun's rays."

FEATURE: Tsunami aid workers' diary
When an earthquake and tsunami struck the Pacific nations of Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, tragedy and devastation followed.Nearly 180 people died in the tsunami, with at least 137 killed in Samoa, 32 in American Samoa, and nine from the northern Tongan island of Niuatpoutapu.
Aid organisations responded quickly to the disaster. Among those sent to help in Samoa were Bianca Collier and Dave Peedom, of Save the Children Australia.
Mr Peedom specialises in aid and development, while Ms Collier has worked in conflict and disaster affected areas such as war-torn Africa and Sri Lanka -- following their 2004 tsunami.
In Samoa, they have been working to distribute emergency relief packages, and identify the best way for their organisation to help the survivors.
Mr Peedom and Ms Collier kept an audio diary of their experiences in Samoa, which aired on Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program.
I've ever watched the scene of stretching noodles on TV, just like some Pizza huts will perform how to make a pizza on the spot, right?
One of the nicer things about autumn is that people start going to hot pot restaurants again. With the cooler weather my friends and I head for our local establishment and tuck in. Just recently our favourite chain has opened branch near where we live. The reason we like it so much is that the staff perform a kind of dance around your table with long strands of noodle. They take a lump of dough and then stretch it until it is several metres long. After that they whirl the noodle strand around and flick it, often just inches away from your nose. It is great fun and a good place to take visitors to the city.
I am amazed by just how many types of noodles there are. It seems every town in China has its own variety; one of my friends gets hers sent up from her hometown specially. Myself, I grew up eating spaghetti, which is an Italian staple, and one story goes that Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy after his journeys in China. There are lots of different types of pasta of which spaghetti is only one; cannelloni, vermicelli, fettuccine, lasagna and tagliatelle are other popular varieties.
Speaking of Marco Polo reminds me of how much I enjoyed visiting the Marco Polo Bridge in Beijing. It is also called Lugou Qiao and was described by Marco Polo himself. I cycled there and found it a restful, pretty place. The river, it used to cross, has long since dried up but the bridge is lovely with four hundred and eighty five carved lions along its span. Each lion is slightly different and I spent a happy afternoon wandering around and taking pictures. Not very many tourists seem to go there so it isn’t a stressful excursion. On my ride home I passed through some railway yards and was overjoyed to see a working steam locomotive. I love steam trains and my favourite scene from the Harry Potter films is when the Hogworts Express crosses the Glenfinnan viaduct in Scotland. This viaduct is a real viaduct and it was built between 1897 and 1901. Unfortunately my steam engine in Beijing didn’t have such a glamorous role, as it had been relegated to shunting!

Two important news about iPhone!
Two news about iPhone!
①
iPhone owners can now purchase extra content through free iPhone apps, whereas before in-app purchasing was only available in apps that cost money. Apple on Thursday sent e-mails to developers stating in-app purchases are now permitted in free apps.
Apple on Thursday sent e-mails to developers stating in-app purchases are now permitted in free apps.
“In App Purchase is being rapidly adopted by developers in their paid apps,” Apple wrote in the letter. “Now you can use In App Purchase in your free apps to sell content, subscriptions, and digital services.”
Some examples of what this means: You can download a free game, and after you complete the levels, you can decide to buy more levels within the app. Or you could download a free news content app, and if you liked what you read, you can opt to pay for some exclusive premium content.
We’re surprised in-app purchases weren’t allowed in free apps in the first place. In September, Wired.com reported on a digital literary magazine called Scarab. The app cost $1, and then users are required to pay $3 per magazine issue. The problem? After paying the initial $1 for the app, it came with zero content; customers must shell out $3 for an issue without even getting to do anything with the app.
We felt Scarab should have been a free app so iPhone users could try out the interface and then decide whether they wished to purchase an issue. However, Apple did not allow in-app purchases through free apps, so the developers had to charge $1 for the app (even though they admitted to Wired.com they didn’t want to).
Will the App Store see a lot of paid apps that were offering in-app purchases convert into free apps? We’re willing to bet that’s going to happen.

The free ride is over, ladies. Go ahead and fire up the Google Maps Apps for your iPhone (or iPhone touch), and you may well run into something you’ve avoided for so, so long: an ad. That’s right: Google Maps now shows advertisements. Things fall apart.
As you know, I don’t have an iPhone, nor will I ever, but here you can see what happens when you search for “sushi” in the City of New York. The ad itself, as Search Engine Land agrees, is rather unobtrusive; it’s not like one of those dumb Hulu ads that prevent you from using the site while it airs.
SEL also throws in some speculation that I’ve never seen before, that Apple is working on its own Map App, one that, presumably, wouldn’t bombard you with ads.
The 21 Club is a fancy restaurant on West 52nd Street. Like, we’re talking suit and tie fancy.

Apple’s change Thursday should come as good news for app developers. Offering apps for free should prove an effective marketing method to lure people into paying for more content eventually. This is the the “freemium” model, as Wired magazine’s Chris Anderson would describe it: The general idea is you get customers used to the service provided for free, so they’ll keep wanting more and eventually pay for the goods.
